Calculate your solar hot water requirements

Water heating is one of the major energy consumers. Because hot water is used year round, solar water heaters are great application for solar energy.

Use this calculator to compare the cost of running a regular gas or electric water heater to a solar water heater and learn how you can save money and energy. This calculator calculates the energy delivered and the energy lost through the tank wall and from there it calculates the amount of energy left to heat the water and the water heater efficiency. By entering the unit cost of gas or electricity, the calculator calculates the total cost of the energy spent. Further, the calculator compares the solar payback to either, gas or electric to the solar water heater. The entry fields are yellow background. Some fields of the calculator are pre-filled with standard figures which can be modified and adjusted for your geographic location. To reset and initiate the calculator, just change the first field, "Diameter" (even if it is pre-filled) and watch.
